HOME STAY PROGRAM FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL and JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Hilltop English Conversation School started its home stay program in the winter of 2006 with the intention to have Hilltop’s elementary school students experience living in American with an American host family and more importantly, to give the students the opportunity to attend an American elementary school.

The program is operated and run by Hilltop, with no other parties involved; therefore, we can try to keep the cost as low as possible for the students without having to pay other travel agencies or companies. Of course, George Sensei goes with the students to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible. To be totally honest, the school does not profit from this program. The profit comes from students who can benefit from this program and come back to tell their experience to the instructors, friends and family members. It’s not only the fulfilling experience the students can get from this program. But also, it gives the students the chance to realize why they are studying English and put their English knowledge into use in an English speaking country. That is the whole purpose of this home stay program.

We chose the San Francisco Bay Area because George Sensei is from there and he has friends to help out with the home stay program. George Sensei and his friends work together to set up the home stay family and contact the local elementary school principal to allow Hilltop students to be part of the student body at the school for a week. Hilltop students are welcomed at the elementary school and are treated like special guests. Towards the end of the home stay program, George rents a mini-van and takes on the role of the tour guide and takes the students all over San Francisco to many of the famous tourist spots in San Francisco. It is not easy an easy task for one adult to do everything. Therefore, Hilltop also takes one Japanese teacher or staff along to help George during the whole home stay program.

Needless to say, the students return with an experience which they will remember for the rest of their lives. It also gives the students the motivation and purpose to learn English even more after they come back to Japan. We hope this program will continue for years to come.

小学生と中学生対象のホームステイプログラム

ヒルトップ英会話学院は2006年の冬にホームステイプログラムをスタートさせました。アメリカのホストファミリーと一緒にアメリカで暮らす経験をヒルトップの小学生にさせてあげることが目的です。そして、このプログラムでは、アメリカの現地の小学校での生活も体験できるようになっています。

ホームステイプログラムはヒルトップ独自に行っています。他の団体と一緒に行動することはありません。他の旅行会社に払う仲介手数料も必要としないので、ホームステイの価格を最低限に抑えることができます。もちろん、ジョージ先生もホームステイの計画がスムーズに行われるように生徒のみんなさんとアメリカに行きます。正直なところ、このプログラムからの収益はありません。生徒のみなさんが日本に戻ってきて、ヒルトップの先生、友達や家族に自分たちが経験して得たものを話してくれることが私たちの利益となるのです。このプログラムでは、ホームステイを遂げるという経験をするだけではありません。なぜ英語を勉強しなくてはならないのかを知る機会、そして、英語を話す国で英語を実践的に使う機会を与えてくれています。これがヒルトップのホームステイプログラム目的なのです。

ホームステイ先はサンフランシスコです。ジョージ先生の出身地なので、ホームステイを手伝ってくれる友達がいるからです。ジョージ先生と友達は、ホストファミリーと連絡を取ったり、訪問先の小学校でヒルトップの生徒を一週間受け入れてもらえるように校長先生にお願いをしたりします。その結果、ヒルトップの生徒は小学校に歓迎してもらえ、特別ゲストとして扱ってもらえるのです。ホームステイの最後は、ジョージ先生がミニバンを借りて、ツアーガイドとなり、サンフランシスコの有名な観光地にヒルトップのみなさんを案内します。すべてのことを一人の大人がやることは簡単な任務ではありません。従ってヒルトップでは日本人講師 又はスタッフがホームステイに同行してジョージ先生の手助けをします。

生徒のみなさんは生涯忘れることのない貴重な経験をして日本に帰ってきます。帰国してからは、英語をもっと勉強しようというやる気と目標も与えてくれています。私たちはこのプログラムをこれからもずっと続けてきたいと思っています。

With the help of Emi Sensei, the 8 kids could have the time of their lives. They got to experience homestay, going to a local elementary school for a few days, and sightseeing in the beautiful city of San Francisco. When we were at the airport coming back, no one wanted to go back to Japan. I hope all the kids will treasure their time in the U.S. and keep this memory for a long long time. Not everyone can have this kind of experience like these kids did. But they were fortunate enough to do this. I'm already getting requests from parents for the next trip. Also, I would like to thank all the host families, my friends, elementary school's principal and teachers. Without everyone's help, this could not have happened. THANK YOU!!
