READING ＆ WRITING CLASS ( Elementary school students 3rd grade - 6th grade　/ *中学1年生まで可能です）

As elementary school kids become 3rd or 4th graders, we have a class called Reading and Writing Class. We started the Reading and Writing Class for elementary school students 3 years ago with the aim to prepare elementary school kids for junior high school’s English classes. It’s not by far a replacement for cram schools (JUKU), but more of a stepping stone to make the transition smoother for kids when they become junior high school students. We focus on vocabulary, grammar, reading, sentence writing and sentence structures, which corresponds to junior high school’s 1st grade English curriculum. Each term is a 6-month course and is renewed and continuous until they graduate from elementary school. (After Reading and Writing Class, students may join the Junior High School English Course）　There are homework assignments and quizzes almost every week. Also, there is a comprehensive test every 2 months. To have homework assignments and quizzes almost every week, students are required to study English almost every day so they can keep up with the teaching of the course.

Students can either take the Reading and Writing class only; or take 2 classes a week – one hour with Reading and Writing Class and the 2nd hour with conversation class. Or students may simply keep on taking the regular conversation class because the students and parents may feel the Reading and Writing Class may be too rigorous for elementary school children. But the satisfaction of seeing good test results makes students more motivated to learn English.

The Reading and Writing Class is usually from 4 students and up to 10 students per class. If the class is small, the native English teacher will teach the class alone. If it’s a big class, for example, more than 5 or 6 students, the class will be conducted by 2 instructors at the same time – 1 native English instructor and 1 Japanese instructor, who is a well-qualified instructor. We monitor each student’s progress by writing a midterm report and a final report for parents to see how their kids are doing in class. At the end of each term, there is a meeting between the Japanese instructor and the parents to discuss the class and the children’s individual progress.

It’s a rigorous course because it requires the students to constantly keep up with their English homework. So there is no time for slacking off or putting off their homework assignments and studies. We understand not every young student can handle the amount of work in the Reading and Writing Class because each student’s level of maturity and growth is different. Even though 2 kids are the same age, one may be ready to take on the challenge, but the other may not be ready until later. Before the student decides to enroll in the Reading and Writing Class, parents are encouraged to discuss about their child with the instructor on whether or not their child is ready for the Reading and Writing Class.
Most of the students who have taken or are taking the Reading and Writing Classes have made a tremendous amount of stride in their English studies. Parents have also been quite satisfied to see how much their children have progressed. We hope this success will continue for many years to come.

読み書きクラス（小学３年生～６年生対象）/*中学1年生までかのうです。

読み書きクラスは小学３年生または４年生になると受講ができます。私たちは小学生を対象に３年前、この読み書きクラスを開講しました。小学生が中学英語の知識を身につけることを目標にしたクラスです。読み書きクラスは学習塾ではありません。しかし、子供たちが中学生になった時に、スムーズに授業に対応できる手助けとなるでしょう。クラスは中学１年生の語彙・文法・読み・書き・構文を中心に学習します。それぞれのコースは６ヶ月関単位で、小学校を卒業するまでにコースを一つずつ上のクラスに更新させていくことになります。毎週宿題と小テストがあります。授業についてこられるように、毎日英語の家庭学習をする必要があります。

読み書きクラスだけではなく、読み書きクラスと会話クラスの二つを毎週一回ずつ受講することもできます。読み書きクラスは小学生にとって厳し過ぎると感じる場合は、会話クラスだけを受講することもできます。しかし、読み書きクラスのテストが子供たちの英語を学ぶ意欲を高めていることも事実です。
読み書きクラスはたいてい４名から１０名までの人数でクラスが編成されています。人数が少ない場合はネイティブ講師が一人で指導をしています。人数が多い場合、例えば5,6名以上の場合はネイティブ講師と資格を持つ日本人講師の二名で指導をすることになります。授業での子供たちの様子が家族の方に分かるように中間リポートや期末リポートをお渡ししています。またリポートに記入することによって、私たちはそれぞれの生徒の学習の進歩を把握していきます。6か月の各期間終了時に講師と保護者の方々でミーティングが行われ、クラスの進度状況や子供たちの様子を話し合います。

生徒のみなさんは毎日英語の宿題をしなければならないので、厳しいコースかもしれません。だらだらしたり、宿題や勉強を後回しにしている時間はありません。しかし、子供たちの成長や発達はそれぞれ異なるので、生徒のみなさん全てが読み書きクラスの学習量をこなせるわけではないと思います。たとえ二人の子供が同じ年齢でも、一人は読み書きクラスを受講できても、もう一人は一年後にならないと受講に適切な時期ではないかもしれません。読み書きクラスを受講する前に、保護者の方はお子さまが読み書きクラスを受講するのに適切な時期かどうかを担当講師と一度話し合ってください。
読み書きクラスを受講した生徒さんや受講中の生徒さんは英語学習においてすばらしい進歩を遂げています。保護者の方々にもお子さまの進歩の様子を十分満足していただいていると思います。

読み書きクラスが子供たちの将来に役立つことをこれからも私たちは願っています。
